1999 — Prince
Released in October 1982, 1999 was Prince’s fifth studio album and his major commercial breakthrough. Facing the onset of the nuclear armageddon anxieties of the early 1980s Cold War era, Prince responded not with despair, but with the ultimate dance party directive: "party like it's 1999."
Pioneering the use of LinnLM drum machines and heavily processed Oberheim synthesizers paired with razor-sharp funk guitar, Prince virtually single-handedly forged the "Minneapolis Sound." The double album contains a stunning run of classics, from the apocalyptic celebration of the title track and the irresistible synth-pop drive of "Little Red Corvette" to the hypnotic party groove of "Delirious." Extended jams like "Automatic" and "D.M.S.R." demonstrate his unmatched ability to hold a funk groove across an entire side of vinyl.
