During the late 1970s and 1980s, the Egyptian music landscape underwent a radical technological and cultural transformation. The rise of inexpensive magnetic cassette tapes dismantled the traditional studio monopolies, giving birth to an explosion of independent labels, visionary young arrangers, and modern electronic bands who bypassed lengthy classical suites in favor of tight, punchy dance grooves.

Curated by Amsterdam-based DJ and collector Moataz Rageb (Disco Arabesquo), Ayam El Disco documents this pivotal transition from traditional Tarab to high-energy Arab disco and Jeel (the youth pop movement pioneered by figures like Hamid El Shari and Hany Shenouda). Featuring pioneering synth ensembles like Al Massrieen, Firkit El Pharana, Medhat Saleh, and Aida El Ayoubi, the compilation brings together slap basslines, analog Roland synthesizers, hypnotic quarter-tone melodies, and LinnDrum beats that filled Cairo's discotheques and car stereos throughout the 1980s.

Pressing Details & Visuals

  • First-Ever Official Vinyl Release: Many of these ultra-rare tracks were originally issued exclusively on magnetic cassette tapes across Egypt and North Africa, making their worldwide vinyl debut on this release.

  • Parisian Audio Remastering: Painstakingly restored and remastered for vinyl by Colorsound Studio in Paris, breathing incredible low-end punch and crystal-clear high frequencies into vintage magnetic tape sources.

  • Curated by Disco Arabesquo: Compiled by researcher, crate-digger, and DJ Moataz Rageb in direct partnership with original Egyptian label archives.

  • Deluxe Illustrated Insert: Includes a dedicated 2-page full-color insert packed with rare cassette cover scans, archival band photography, and detailed bilingual liner notes explaining the history of the Egyptian cassette era.

Collector's Note: Tracking down original, clean copies of 1980s Egyptian cassette releases is famously difficult due to decades of tape degradation and intense heat exposure. This Wewantsounds release represents a massive preservation achievement, using specialized analog tape restoration to bring the punchy drum machines and synth basslines to audiophile-grade vinyl fidelity.
